The SJA League is an organized event involving St. John’s Academy alumni or former students, formed to promote friendship and sportsmanship between former schoolmates. With the use of basketball as a bridge that builds the connection between “St. Johnite’s.”
Teams are given deadlines and ample time to comply with roster submission and financial obligations. Teams who fail to follow the set dates are assessed necessary penalties to cover for additional expenses involving the teams responsible.
Team and Player Eligibility
- All teams can play 15 players max during games. Finalized rosters must be approved by the league organizing committee.
- St. John’s Academy alumni(h.s. graduates first, then grade 6 finishers) are prioritized in lineup approval. Former students who
didn’t graduate from SJA must have enrolled there for at least 4 years to be approved to play. - Teams are not allowed to add players to their lineups when the tournament begins.
Tournament Format and Play-off procedures
- Game schedules will be given in advance to all teams involved. Teams will be informed ahead of time for any necessary schedule changes. All games will start on time based on the announced schedule. If less than 5 players appear at tipoff time, that team will automatically forfeit the game.
- Single round robin format will be used for the elimintation round
or “regular season.” - The top four teams in the league standings will advance to the final four which will be in a single elimination format. 1st game will be team #2 vs. team #3, and team #1 vs. team #4. A single championship game will determine the winner of the tournament.
Tie-Breaker Rules
- Head to head competition
- Point differential or quotient system
- Knock-out game. (*Will only happen if both teams playing agree to
cover financial costs for this particular game.)
In-Game Rules
- FIBA official game rules will be implemented in games.
- Any technical or unsportsmanlike fouls assessed to a player or a team will be fined P300 for each infraction. The responsible player or team will not be allowed to continue to play the next game if the Technical foul penalty is not settled before tipoff of their succeeding game. Teams will be charged P300 for every technical foul assessed on them after a 2nd is called on them.
- Teams are given 1 timeout each of the 1st 3 periods. 2 timeouts are given for the 4th period.
Overtime periods will be played as follows:
- Overtime period will run for 3 minutes of which the first 2
minutes will be running time and the last minute will be stop-time. - Each team will be awarded one time-out per overtime period. No
carrying of time-outs. - Team foul situations from the 4th period will carry over into the
overtime period.
* A player upon getting his 3rd technical or unsportsmanlike foul will be kicked out of the tournament.
* Players or teams are subject to ejection from the league if proven guilty of irresponsible acts towards particpating teams, players and game officials.
SJA basketball league is a non-profit event created to promote respect, sportsmanship and friendship among fellow St. Johnites. All participating teams are encouraged to treat other players, teams, and game officials with respect to show the true essence of sportsmanship.
